The project is built based on a strategy to renovate an emblematic building in the City of Santa Fe [Sanatorio Finoquieto] that existed from the 40's. The fundamental premise within the operation was to preserve as much of the covered surface as possible and at the same time, try to optimize not only functional and spatial issues, but also to provide a new natural synergy through the incorporation of a series of patios for better permeability and balance between natural and artificial.
The client required two well-defined and differentiated functions: on the one hand, external clinics for basic medical care and, on the other, a series of clinics for psychophysical examinations to qualify cargo drivers. The existing building gave an already favorable disposition through the existence of an open corridor on the North dividing wall and a closed corridor in the center of the building [circulation axis of the old sanatorium]. On the southern dividing wall there was also a narrow and linear patio which already delineated a strategy of natural lighting to the existing "rooms".
From this organizational axis, the new functions were distributed and at the same time the 8 patios were generated for lighting and ventilation of the premises, which in turn propose different situations of effects - water, vegetation, stone, grass, flagstones. , etc. -. The largest operation in the intervention was at the time of organizing the new entrance hall, for which the entire structure of walls and existing bearing columns was demolished while a new metal structure was inserted, which is hidden within the new organizational spaces. The building had to organize two independent entrances for the functions on the ground floor and a third entrance for the administrative functions that are located on the upper floor. In turn, the hall should offer the possibility of integrating and communicating the two functions through a common waiting room. As for the façade, it was determined that a new skin would be attached to it, which acts in an "indexical" manner with respect to functional, effect and strategy issues in an act of mediation between pre-existence and new needs. A new idea of a “public promenade” was generated –inwards the building line- through the decision to grant a greater width of thickness to the existing narrow sidewalk and at the same time, the façade takes on a new thickness generating “volume ”Over the sidewalk exacerbating this condition between the positive - negative or concave - convex. From this new natural and social atrium it is possible to access the three different functions already mentioned.
The determination of the use of the "panelization" resource, as an investigative and constructive strategy, is linked to the understanding of the subdivision of surfaces based on a rigorous geometric limitation of the surface, its material characteristics and possible constructive dimensions. This idea of topographic “panelization” is linked to a surface development language linked to assembly systems of the architectural type rather than to sculptural systems based on the idea of monolith. In relation to the design technique, a series of lines were drawn on the surface trying to articulate different regions but at the same time amalgamating these separate parts into a coherent whole. Thus, the surface is transformed not only into a "formal element" but at the same time it is transformed into an articulating element of light flows, movement, proportion and effects. Regarding the materialization of the same, a new structure of metallic "ribs" was generated in structural pipe superimposed on the facade and on it pre-painted aluminum panels type "alpolic" were mounted to which a series of perforations based on a series of digitally controlled parameters determining different logics and proportions in an effort to make the whole building function as a “great Billboard” through multiple lighting effects at night and a series of effects generated by the incidence from the sun during the day.
Finally, the building is understood not only through its predetermined function but as an articulating instrument of social mediation between the domain of public space and the domain of private space as a continuum, where relationships feed back and instrument the uses and the different situations and where the natural and the artificial refine and redefine spatial values.
